Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (“the Hospital”) was founded on July 1, 1959. In 1984, the Hospital was renamed The Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In September 1998, the Hospital was again renamed The Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. After it was merged with Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in November 2001, the Hospital has been known as Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Institute of Chinese Medicine, The Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University and Xinjiang Famous TCM Physician and Prescription Research and Development Center. With six decades of development, especially the rapid development over the past two decades, the Hospital has grown into a large-sized, technically strong, state-of-the-art Grade III Class A TCM hospital characteristic of TCM, gathering TCM and Western medicine specialists and offering medical treatment, teaching, scientific research, preventive health care and rehabilitation services through a complete range of departments. The Hospital is also the National TCM Clinical Research Base, the Construction Unit of the Key TCM Hospital Project of the National TCM Inheritance and Innovation Program, the National Advantageous and Characteristic Education and Training Base of TCM, the National Chinese Herbal Medicine Processing and Inheritance Base, the National TCM International Cooperation Base, the National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, and the National Postdoctoral Research Workstation. The Chinese Herbal Medicine Processing Research Laboratory and Respiratory Disease Research Laboratory are the key laboratories of Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
The Hospital consists of 100 clinical and medical technology departments, 27 administrative and logistics departments, 3 outpatient departments, 1 branch and 1 division. Among about 3,000 employees is 1 TCM Master, 3 Nationally Famous TCM Physicians, 9 Experts on Special Government Allowance of The State Council, 1 Young TCM Scholar, 4 Famous TCM Physicians of Ethnic Medicine in the Autonomous Region, and 19 Instructors Inheriting Academic Experience from National Senior TCM Experts.

Thus far, the Hospital has established 4 National Key Clinical Departments (TCM Specializations) (Departments of Cardiovascular Disease, Orthopedics, Dermatology and Pulmonary Disease), 10 Key Departments of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the 12th Five-year Plan Period (Department of Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Endocrinology, Emergency, Dermatology, Pulmonary Disease, Acupuncture, Intensive Care Unit (Cultivation Program), Clinical Pharmacy (Cultivation Program), and Nursing (Cultivation program)), 8 Key Disciplines of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Bone Injury Science in TCM, Dermatology in TCM, Geriatrics in TCM, Clinical Chinese Medicine, Pulmonary Science in TCM, Cardiology in TCM, Collaterology in TCM (Cultivation Program), TCM Culture (Cultivation Program)), 4 Regional TCM (Specialization) Diagnosis and Treatment Center Programs of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Department of Pulmonary Disease, Department of Dermatology, Department of Cardiovascular Disease, Department of Emergency (Intensive Care Unit) (Cultivation Project)), 10 Key Disciplines at the Autonomous Region Level (Proctology in TCM, Pulmonary Science in TCM, Endocrinology in TCM, Dermatology in TCM, Encephalology in TCM, Nephrology in TCM, Science of Chinese Massage, Science of Splenogastric diseases in TCM, Cardiology in TCM, Science of Acupuncture and Moxibustion), and 3 Key Clinical Departments at the Autonomous Region Level (Encephalopathy Department, Clinical Laboratory Department, and Medical Imaging Department).
The characteristic TCM services of the Hospital enjoy a good reputation all over the country. More than 100 characteristic TCM diagnosis and treatment services are provided all year round. Such characteristic TCM services as acupuncture, massage, acupotomy, TCM diet, TCM fumigation and washing, immersion bath, soaking, and application are highly popular among the majority of patients. The Hospital has been equipped with advanced medical equipment such as PET-CT, ECT, electron linear accelerator, 3.0T MRI, dual-source CT, DSA, digital gastrointestinal machine, 4K high-definition laparoscope, and examination line. It has carried out cardiovascular and cerebrovascular interventional therapy, heart bypass surgery, artificial joint replacement surgery, spinal foraminoscopic surgery, thoracoscopic surgery, arthroscopic surgery, endoscopic bronchial thermoforming surgery, electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy, endotracheal silicone stent implantation, atrial fibrillation cryoballoon treatment, endovascular heat exchange cooling and other multidisciplinary operations, some of which are leading in Xinjiang.
In recent years, the Hospital has adhered to the scientific research development strategy of “laying the foundation, building the mechanism and focusing on innovation”, strengthened the scientific research work, and made great progress in its scientific research capacity. The level and number of scientific research projects at all levels of the Hospital have increased rapidly. From 2019 to 2021, 358 scientific research projects were approved, 22 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation; one national key research sub-project and 104 provincial and ministerial research projects were awarded in 2020.
As the fourth clinical medical school of Xinjiang Medical University, the Hospital has set up 13 clinical teaching and research offices: Teaching and Research Office of Internal Medicine of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Surgery of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Gynecology of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Gynecology of Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Bone Injury of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Massage of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Teaching and Research Office of Basic Diagnostics, Teaching and Research Office of Nursing, Teaching and Research Office of Rehabilitation of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Clinical Teaching and Research Office of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Since 2016, the Hospital has undertaken 4 medical education research projects of Medical Education Branch of Chinese Medical Association and Specialized Committee of Medical Education of China Association of Higher Education, 4 education and teaching reform projects of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and 23 education and teaching reform projects of Xinjiang Medical University. Moreover, the Hospital has taken on 2 quality resource sharing courses and 1 quality video open class of Xinjiang Medical University, and directed the undergraduates to obtain the approval of 3 projects at the Autonomous Region level and 18 projects at the university level of the College Student Innovation Program.
The Hospital adheres to the Party building concept of “focusing on the overall goal of Xinjiang work and giving full play to the advantages of Party building in hospitals to promote development”. The Hospital has set up a total of 9 Party branches (8 service employee Party branches and 1 retiree Party branch), with a total of 1349 Party members. The Hospital has been awarded National Advanced Collective of Health System, National Advanced Unit of Industry Ethos Development of Health System, Advanced Collective of Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Management, National Advanced Collective of Traditional Chinese Medicine Nursing, National Advanced Unit of Hospital (Health) Culture Development (4 times), National Advanced Unit of Ideological and Political Work of Health System, National Top 100 Reform and Innovation Hospitals, National Humanistic and Care Hospital, China’s Outstanding Performance Unit of Anti-Epidemic Medical Expert Team and other titles. It has been further granted the title of National Civilized Unit for six consecutive years. In 2003, the Hospital was first certified by the ISO9001: 2000 Quality Management System among the Grade III Class A hospitals in Xinjiang. In 2013, The Hospital’s Ethics Committee was rated by the Ethics Review Committee of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies as an Ethical Review Platform for TCM Clinical Research Unit.
